The development of social categorization and intergroup attitudes in 3-to-6-year-old children : the impact of the social status and numerical status

Dans cette thèse, nous étudions l’impact du statut social et numérique et celui de la diversité culturelle sur le développement de la catégorisation sociale et les attitudes intergroupes chez les enfants âgés de 3 à 6 ans. Pour étudier ces facteurs, nous utilisons des photographies représentant des enfants de trois groupes ethniques : Caucasiens, Noir-Africains et Maghrébins. Ces photographies sont utilisées dans une tâche libre de catégorisation sociale et une échelle de perception de distance culturelle. Les résultats montrent qu’il y a un effet de l’âge sur la catégorisation ethnique : plus les enfants sont âgés, plus ils réussissent à catégoriser les groupes ethniques. De plus, on retrouve un effet du statut social du groupe sur cette tâche : les enfants de haut statut social réussissent mieux à catégoriser les groupes ethniques que ceux appartenant à un groupe de bas statut social. Concernant la perception de distance culturelle, les résultats montrent que les participants perçoivent les photographies représentant des Noir-Africains et des Maghrébins comme plus distantes que celles représentant des Caucasiens. Cependant, cet effet peut être modifié en fonction (1) du statut du groupe : les enfants de bas statut ne perçoivent pas toujours ces différences entre les photos, (2) de la diversité d’un environnement : dans des écoles moyennement diversifiées, les participants ne perçoivent pas de différence significative entre les photos, et (3) de l’interaction entre le statut du groupe et la diversité de l’environnement : cette différence perçue entre les photographies est d’autant plus forte pour les participants issus de bas statut social et scolarisés dans des écoles faiblement diversifiées.In this thesis, we study the impact of a group’s social and numerical status as well as the level of cultural diversity of the school on the development of social categorization and intergroup attitudes in children aged between 3 and 6 years. In order to study these factors, we use photographs representing children from three racial groups: Caucasian, Black-African, and North African. These photographs are used in a free social categorization task and a cultural distance perception task. The results show an age effect on racial categorization: the older the children, the more successful they are at the racial categorizing task. In addition, there is an effect of the group’s social status: high social status children are more successful in the racial categorizing task than those belonging to a low social status group. Regarding the perception of cultural distance, the results show that participants perceive photographs portraying Black-Africans and North-Africans as more culturally different compared to those portraying Caucasians. However, this effect can vary according (1) the social status of the participants’ group: cross-cultural differences are perceived mostly by high social status children (i.e, Caucasians), (2) the level of a school’s cultural diversity: in medium diversified schools, participants do not perceive a significant difference between the photographs, and (3) the interaction between these factors (the social status of the participants’ group and the diversity of the environment): the perception of intercultural differences between the photographs is stronger among low social status’ participants enrolled in low diversified schools
