Towards a better comprehension of the mechanism of hydrogen absorption in multicomponent high entropy alloys of the composition HfNbTiVZr

L'hydrogène possède une faible densité volumétrique ce qui est un problème pour son stockage. Ainsi, pour pouvoir le stocker en toute sécurité, en grandes quantités et sous une pression modérée, les systèmes de stockage à l'état solide basés sur les hydrures métalliques sont considérés comme une solution très intéressante. Dans ce projet de thèse, nous étudions la caractérisation structurale et les propriétés de sorption de l’hydrogène de différents alliages à haute entropie ayant la composition Hf1-xTixNbVZr (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 et 1). Ces alliages ont été préparés à l'aide de deux techniques différentes : la fusion à l'arc et la fusion par induction.Notre étude a mis en évidence que la méthode de synthèse et la composition chimique avaient un effet sur la structure cristalline et la microstructure des alliages. Les conditions de sorption (absorption à température ambiante et sous 20 bar d’hydrogène) se sont révélées favorables pour l’activation des alliages, à l’exception des compositions Hf0.25Ti0.75NbVZr (x = 0.75) et TiNbVZr (x = 1) synthétisés par fusion à induction. Pour toute la gamme de composition étudiée, la quantité d'hydrogène absorbée est proche de H/M = 2. Notre étude a également examiné l'effet du traitement thermique sur la stabilité des phases et la capacité de stockage de l'hydrogène au sein des alliages Hf0.75Ti0.25NbVZr et TiNbVZr. Le traitement thermique modifie la composition des phases et réduit l'abondance de la phase cubique centrée (CC), ce qui entraîne (i) une diminution de la capacité de stockage de l'hydrogène et (ii) une augmentation de la température nécessaire pour l’activation.Hydrogen, having a low volumetric density, poses several challenges for its storage. Thus, to store hydrogen safely, in large quantities and under moderate pressure, solid-state storage systems based on metal hydrides are considered as a very interesting solution. In this project, we study the structural characterization and hydrogen sorption properties of different high entropy alloys having the composition Hf1-xTixNbVZr (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 et 1). These alloys were prepared using two different techniques: arc melting and induction melting.Our study showed that the synthesis method and the chemical composition had an effect on the crystal structure and the microstructure of the alloys. The sorption conditions (absorption at room temperature and under 20 bar of hydrogen) were found to be favorable for the activation of the alloys, except for the compositions Hf0.25Ti0.75NbVZr (x = 0.75) and TiNbVZr (x = 1) synthesized by induction melting. For the entire compositional range studied, the amount of hydrogen absorbed is close to H/M = 2. Our study also examined the effect of heat treatment on the phase stability and hydrogen storage capacity within the Hf0.75Ti0.25NbVZr and TiNbVZr alloys. Heat treatment changes the phase composition and reduces the abundance of the body-centered cubic phase (BCC), resulting in (i) a decrease in hydrogen storage capacity and (ii) an increase in the temperature required for activation
