Prévost et son Cleveland : essai de mise au point historique

Philip Stewart : Prévost and the publication of Cleveland. The seven authentic volumes of Le Philosophe anglais, ou Histoire de M. Cleveland were published between 1731 and 1739, but the history has never been clear. Prévost probably began the novel in England, where the first two volumes appeared in English before the Utrecht edition in French (Néaulme). Néaulme finally published vols. 3 and 4 in September 1731, and in 1734 commissioned an anonymous sequel. The three volumes of Prévost 's own conclusion were sold in Paris in 1738-9 under permission tacite , despite the rubric : Utrecht, Etienne Néaulme. Although the plot had deviated from the intentions stated in the original preface, the thematic unity remains firm.
