Glaciations in the Pyrénées of Ariège. The mountains of the upper Ariège river have an average altitude above 1.750 m and very extensive erosional surfaces. This catchment basin has fed one of the longest pleistocene glaciers in the Pyrenees. In the limits of the maximal extension of the ice, many phases may be distinguished : Io complex old phases, provisionally named together phase of Foix ; 2° a younger phase, the phase of Garrabet, subdivided into three stages (Garrabet, Bompas-Arignac, la Bernière) ; 3° a later stage present only in the higher mountains, the neoglacial stage.
