The notion of ecphrasis does not exactly correspond to what our literary tradition habitually means by « description ». As a matter of fact, and notably since G.H. Lessing who radically opposed narration to description in his Laocoon, it is the referent which essentially serves to discriminate one from the other : the former represents actions and events in their chronological order of occurence while the latter describes objects or characters. For the theoreticians of Antiquity, on the contrary, the ecphrasis is solely defined by its power of visualisation and by the slowing down of narration which helps create that power, whatever the referent may be, while this type of text need not present the static aspect of a simultaneous vision or o...
