Hecate as the guarantor of cleanliness, or the deposit of offal will be prosecuted. Vienna museum (Austria) preserves a marble from Salone (Dalmatia). A representation of the triple Hecate complete with daggers and whips is accompanied by a curious caption : the goddesses shall be favourable to him that will abstain from urinating or defecating in the vicus ; should he infringe the law, consequences will follow. The contributor studies other inscriptions forbidding the deposit of stercus ; their aim is to protect shrines and sepultures. It seems that the minds of people at Salone were steeped in religious awe threatening divine vengeance in case of sullification of the vicus.
