A « Forced » Loan in Arras in 1433. The pressing demands for subsidies made by the prince, above all in times of war, compel the cities to face them most of the time in an emergency. For lack of immediately available funds, one of the most frequent means resorted to is the levy of life annuities. A loan raised among the wealthier citizens is also used. Rarer is the forced loan raised from part of the middle-class. In the case of Arras, two such occurrences are know.
