This study of Solon, fr. 12 W, intends to understand how the metaphor the poet resorts to in order to speak of the sea as something fair works and how it enables to characterize this physical element, which is unstable by nature, through ethical concepts that rather refer to the idea of balance. The Iliadic comparison of the people with the sea is implicitly taken up here and it is thought over in this riddle-like distich.
