Oral généalogies are unreliable for reconstructing past populations because they are affected by two kinds of bias. Firstly, there are those due to the nature of oral genealogies which even the most careful data collection cannot eliminate. The main ones are the over-representation of fertile lines of descendants, with the consequent risk of over-estimation of fertility, and omissions of people who died before reaching adultage and under-reporting of migrations, with the risk of under-estimation of mortality and migration. Secondly, there are those related to the method of date collection which can, on the contrary, be reduced by improving the latter.
