Reunion Island in the XVIIIth Century — The use of parish records and census (1711, 1713 and 1735) allowed J. Houdaille to study the island's white, more stable population. Women were married very young (median age less than 19 years) and their fertility rate was high (deseending before 1720 : 11.8 chidren ; and 8.9 in 1720-1739). The adult death rate increased during the century and hit the women more severely (life expectancy at the age of 20 is 40.1 years for men and 37.6, for women). J. Houdaille attributes this excessive female death rate to death during child delivery.
