During the periods when the plague was the most devastating, death records were poorly maintained. Could we not fill in the gaps in parish records by calculating the frequency of property transfers ? In the Liège diocese, the ecclesiastical judge designates the mambours (guardians) who must, among other duties, manage the inheritance of underaged orphans. The mambournies (guardian-ships) are well maintained from 1570 to 1680. A series of 3432 judgements seem complète during the decade 1631 to 1640, which saw economic crises, invasions and epidemies one after another.
