Saint-Wasnon et Saint-Vaast : deux remarquables églises de Contant d'Ivry

Two churchbuildings in the Nord department stand out in the history of neo- classicism. St-Wasnon's is the first example of a church displaying a lightly built vault resting on an entablature and isolated columns, this as early as the middle of the XVIIIth century. St-Vaast's, with the majestic proportions of our Gothic cathedrals, nearly achieves the ideal established by the theoreticians of the so- called Enlightenment age : the blending of Gothic airiness and light with the use of Antique orders. The Paris architect, Contant d'Ivry, author of both buildings, is bold enough to use brick vaults in large buildings. He is also famous for his contribution to the Valenciennes General Hospital, to the Hermitage Park and to the Lille Government Hall.Deux églises du département du Nord ont une place privilégiée dans l'histoire du néo-classicisme. St-Wasnon est la première église à voûte légère reposant sur un entablement et des colonnes isolées, dès le milieu du XVIIIe siècle. St-Vaast, avec les dimensions grandioses de nos cathédrales gothiques, réalise presque l'idéal des théoriciens du siècle dit de lumière : alliance de la légèreté et de la clarté gothiques avec l'usage des ordres antiques. L'architecte parisien Contant d'Ivry, auteur de ces deux églises, ose utiliser des voûtes en brique pour des édifices d'importance. Il est aussi connu par ses interventions à l'Hôpital Général de Valenciennes, au parc de 1'Hermitage et l'Hôtel du Gouvernement de Lille.Twee kerken in het département du Nord nemen een vooraanstaande plaats is in de geschiedenis van het neo-classicisme. St-Wasnon is de eerste kerk met een licht gewelf dat rust op een kroonwerk en aparté kolonnen, en dat in het midden van de XVIIIe eeuw. Sint-Vaast heeft de grandiose afmetingen van een gotische kathedraal en verwezenlijkt bijna het ideaal van de theoretici van de eeuw van de Verlichting : het samengaan van de gothische lichtheid en helderheid en het gebruik van de antieke orde. De Parijze, naar Contant d'Ivry, de architect van deze twee kerken, waagt het bakstenen gewelven te gebruiken voor grote gebou- wen. Men kent hem ook voor zijn werk aan het « Hôpital général » te Valenciennes, het park van de hermitage en het « Hôtel du gouvernement » te Rijsel.Joudiou Gabrielle.
