Two churchbuildings in the Nord department stand out in the history of neo- classicism. St-Wasnon's is the first example of a church displaying a lightly built vault resting on an entablature and isolated columns, this as early as the middle of the XVIIIth century. St-Vaast's, with the majestic proportions of our Gothic cathedrals, nearly achieves the ideal established by the theoreticians of the so- called Enlightenment age : the blending of Gothic airiness and light with the use of Antique orders. The Paris architect, Contant d'Ivry, author of both buildings, is bold enough to use brick vaults in large buildings. He is also famous for his contribution to the Valenciennes General Hospital, to the Hermitage Park and to the Lille Government...
