Production et commerce du sel à l'Age du Fer et à l'époque romaine dans l'Europe du Nord-Ouest.

Salt Production and Trade in the Iron Age and in Roman Times in North-West Europe. Progress in naval archaeology, the recent discovery of abundant vestiges of the salt industry in the Iron Age (brick-work) and of its continuation down to the end of the Roman Times in England and on the continent, the study of the marine Quaternary and the transgressions, the analysis of the salt economy of the Celtic populations in the Hallstatt période have helped us define a new questioning about the commercial exchanges across the English Channel and the North Sea in Antiquity and present us with a new reading of the few Greek and Roman written documents. England, not in a more unfavourable position than the North-Western quadrant of the continent, had no need for the Breton, Norman, Picard or Flemish salt, the quite scattered production of native salt covered the needs of the insular populations. Sea going boats were not equipped to transport this soluble produce. The continent had to keep its harvests to direct the surplus, not consumed by the coastal populations, towards its hinterland. This trade and transport on water-ways is testified by archaeological and epigraphical findings scattered from the mouth of the Scheldt to Rimini. The situation developed in the oldest Antiquity prolonged itself down to the heart of the Middle-Ages (the end of the XIIIth century) when the revolution in sea transport altered the salt trade.Les progrès de l'archéologie navale, les récentes découvertes des abondants vestiges de l'industrie du sel à l'Age du Fer (briquetages) et de ses prolongements jusqu'à la fin de l'époque romaine en Angleterre et sur le continent, l'étude du Quaternaire marin et des transgressions, l'analyse de l'économie du sel des populations celtes à l'époque de Hallstatt aident à définir de nouvelles problématiques sur les échanges commerciaux à travers la Manche et la mer du Nord dans l'Antiquité et offrent une nouvelle lecture des rares documents écrits grecs ou latins. L'Angleterre, pas moins défavorisée que le quadrant nord-ouest du continent, n'avait pas besoin du sel breton, normand, picard ou flamand, la production très éparpillée de sel ignigène couvrait les besoins des populations insulaires. Les barques marines n'étaient pas équipées pour le transport de ce produit soluble. Le continent était dans la nécessité de garder ses récoltes pour en diriger les surplus non consommés par les populations côtières vers l 'arrière-pays. De ce commerce et du transport fluvial témoignent des trouvailles archéologiques et épigraphiques dispersées du delta de l'Escaut à Rimini. La situation créée dans la plus haute Antiquité se prolongea jusqu'au coeur du Moyen Age (à la fin du XIIIe siècle) quand la révolution du transport maritime modifia le marché du sel.Zoutproductie enhandel van de Ijsertijd tot het Romeinse Rijk in Noordwest-Europa. De vooruitgang van de scheepsarcheologie, de recente ontdekking van grote overblijfselen van de zoutindustrie in de Ijzertijd (bakstenen) en de uitlopers ervan tot het einde van de Romeinse tijd in Engeland en op het continent, de studie van het maritiem Quaternair en van de transgressies, de analyse van de zoutekonomie bij de keltische bevolking in de Hallstattperiode, dat ailes leidt tot een nieuwe definitie van de handel over het Kanaal en de Noordzee, tijdens de Oudheid, en maakt een nieuwe lezing mogelijk van de zeldzame Griekse en Romeinse geschreven bronnen. Engeland was niet minder benadeeld dan continentaal Noordwest-Europa en had geen zout nodig uit Bretagne, Normandie, Picardie of Vlaanderen. De zeer verspreide productie van eruptiezout volstond voor de behoeften van de eilandbewoners. De zeeschepen waren er niet op voorzien dit oplosbaar product te vervoeren. Het continent moest zijn oogst houden en het surplus naar het binnenland brengen. Archeologische vondsten en verspreide opschriften tussen de Rijndelta en Rimini getuigen van deze handel en transport. De toestand veranderde niet tot in het midden van de middeleeuwen (13de eeuw).
