L’Éthiopie au château d’Abbadia. De la création à l’expression d’un programme orientaliste

Ethiopia at the Château d’Abbadia : From creation to expression of an orientalist program ; At his return from an eleven-year stay in Ethiopia, the scientist explorer Antoine d’Abbadie undertook the building of his château d’Abbadia on the steep banks of Basque coast. In a neo-gothic architectural context, he wanted the building to evocate Ethiopian people and territories that he fervently studied throughout his life. The project’s creation and realization was given to Eugène-E. Viollet-le-Duc and Edmond Duthoit and took place between 1864 and 1879. Duthoit and d’Abbadie strictly collaborated so as to create Ethiopian decors which simultaneously were aesthetically beautiful, methodically rationalist and scientifically meaningful. The recent researches in Duthoit’s fund and at the château d’Abbadia permitted to precise the dating, the methodology and the creative process concerning these Ethiopic decors which are composed of figurative wall-paintings, picturesque objects and literary texts. This comment’s spin consists in treating Abbadia’s Ethiopian subject in a vision of set in order to understand its conception and its meanings from artistic, social and ideological viewpoints.À son retour d’un séjour de onze années en Éthiopie, l’explorateur scientifique Antoine d’Abbadie entreprit la construction de son château d’Abbadia sur les rivages escarpés de la côte basque. Au cœur d’un contexte architectural néogothique, il souhaitait que l’édifice évoque les contrées et le peuple éthiopiens qu’il étudia passionnément tout au long de sa vie. La création et la réalisation du projet furent confiées à Eugène-E. Viollet-le-Duc et Edmond Duthoit entre 1864 et 1879. Duthoit et d’Abbadie collaborèrent étroitement afin de créer des décors éthiopiens à la fois esthétiquement beaux, méthodiquement rationalistes et scientifiquement significatifs. Les recherches récentes effectuées dans le fonds Duthoit et au château d’Abbadia ont permis de préciser la datation, la méthodologie et le processus créatif de ces décors éthiopisants composés de peintures murales figuratives, d’objets pittoresques et de textes littéraires. Le parti pris de ce propos consiste à traiter le sujet éthiopien d’Abbadia dans son ensemble afin de comprendre sa conception et ses significations du point de vue artistique, social et idéologique.Delpech Viviane.
