In the musical tradition of the Unified Christian Orthodox Church of Ethiopia, liturgical chants are identified according to one of the three following categories : gue'ez, ezl, araray. As for the chant singers, each category can be easily identified on the basis of aesthetic, symbolic and functional criteria, which are however ineffective for the non-specialist. The question raised in this article deals with a possible correspondence between vernacular categories and specific musical scales.
