Le complexe métroaque d'Arras-Baudimont

The archaeological research carried out since 1984 on the Baudimont-I site in Arras have led to the making-out of a worship complex dedicated to eastern deities ; the study of the material and of the structures allows in the present state of the research to conclude to a predominance of the devotions to Cybele and particularly to her «parèdre» Attis, of whom was found a sculpted figuration in red porphyria. This complex displays unusual features : one can find ritually «functionnal» fittings, within an architectural framework at first glance non-classical where in particular wooden structures abund ; the excavation of pits dug right in the soil below the floorboards in conformity with the description given by Prudence of the settings where the metroac taurobol takes place undoubtedly constitutes a most exceptional discovery. The material unearthed shows that the development of eastern cults has grown, in Arras as well as in other sites of worship, «symbiotically» with the older Gallo-Roman type religiosity.Les recherches archéologiques menées depuis 1984 sur le site de Baudimont I à Arras ont amené la mise en évidence d'un complexe cultuel consacré aux divinités orientales ; l'étude du matériel et des structures permet en l'état actuel des recherches de conclure à une prédominance des dévotions rendues à Cybèle et plus particulièrement à son parèdre Attis, dont a été découverte une figuration sculptée en porphyre rouge. Cet ensemble présente un caractère inédit : nous y trouvons des aménagements rituellement «fonctionnels», dans un cadre architectural de prime abord non-classique, où abondent notamment les structures en bois ; la mise en évidence de fosses en pleine terre sous plancher conformes à la description donnée par Prudence des installations où se déroule le taurobole métroaque constitue en particulier une découverte des plus exceptionnelles. Le matériel mis au jour montre que le développement des cultes orientaux s'est effectué, à Arras comme sur d'autres sites sanctuariaux, en «symbiose» avec la vieille religiosité de type gallo- romain.De opgravingen sedert 1984 hebben sporen opgeleverd van een kultusplaats toegewijd aan Oosterse goden ; uit de studie van het materiaal en van de struktuur blijkt dat vooral Kybele en Attis vereerd wer- den. Men vod een afbeelding van Attis in rode porfier. Het complex heeft een uitzonderlijk karakter : : men vind er funktionele aanpassingen voor de riten in een niet klassiek gebouw waarin heel wat hout verwerkt is. De overblijfselen van putten onder de vloer die overeenkomen met de beschrijving van Prudentius van het stierenoffer zijn een buitengewone ontdekking. Uit het opgegraven materiaal blijkt verder dat de oostrse culten zich in Arras, zoals in andere heiligdommen, ontwikkeld hebben in symbiose met de oude Gallo-Romeinse eredjensten.Jacques Alain, Belot Eric.
