« Urban population » is traditionally referred to in methodologically static terms. The Bologna case-study shows that towns are characterized by very intense in — and — outmigration. The « demographic renewal » seems, therefore, to constitute an essential factor in the life of towns. This factor has always been neglected in the case of a merely dimensional analysis, made on the basis of static data only.
