Milanese anagraphic material is one of the only sources that gives an in-depth picture of movements within a nineteenth-century city. With a sample of 400 family filing-cards, 1741 households can be followed from 1811 to 1861. Very mobile family units turn out to be rare, the mean time span separating moves being greater than five years. Different analyses point to differentiated residential practices, according to the profession and geographic origin. In contrast, there seem to be close links between the choice of residence and the demographic life cycles.
