This paper aims to analyse the rôle played by the different causes of death in health transition and their characteristic features. The paper is based on mortality data by cause in three different countries, each representing three typical instances of transition in Europe : England from 1871-1951 and Italy from 1881-1951 ; available data from Norway only allow us to study a period (1910-1951) which is already at quite an advanced stage, and were employed so as to make a more complete comparison.
