In contrast to the present day situation in Europe, premature mortality remains a fact of life in the majority of developing countries. Most deaths occur in infants and young children and malnutrition is frequently cited as playing at least a contributory rôle. Though individuals with a poor nutritional status are more at risk to infection and have been shown to hâve a compromised immune System, the inter-relationship between these factors is far from simple. Malnutrition for example is not simply a reflection of food availability, disease itself frequently causes more severe loss of weight and growth faltering than diet alone.
