It has been possible to study the main characteristics of nuptiality in a large metropolis during the first half of the XIXth century by using a series of extractions of marriage records. The existence of a hard core of permanent celibacy, almost independent of the sex ratio, can be linked to the social specificity of the marriage market. The concentration of marriages during the months of February and October tends of increase during the whole of the XIXth century, thereby contradicting the notion of possible dechristianisation.
