During the XVIIIth century, 15 to 20.000 stonemasons -a third of the maie population aged over 15- migrate each year from the province of Haute-Marche, which corresponds to the present- day Creuse department. They travel far and wide, from the Paris area (where half the masons are of Haute-Marche extraction) to the south of the Massif Central and from Bordeaux to Lyon. They leave in March each year and do not return until early winter, or not at ail : permanent migration is not inconsiderable from the beginning of the XVIIIth century.
