Up to the XIXth century, the practice of abandoning children became more and more widespread in Europe and even some legitimate children were concerned. Some data on the fate of those entrusted to the Hospital of the Innocent in Florence are examined for the years 1762-1764 and 1809-1811. Most of the legitimate children were eventually taken back by their parents ; of the rest, three-quarters died before reaching adulthood. Some information is available on what became of the survivors : two-thirds of the boys entrusted to peasant nurses remained in the countryside while the others became apprentices as soon as they were ten years old ; on the other hand, almost all the girls were taken back by the Hospital which took care of them up to the ...
