No deep research has yet been undertaken on infanticide in the eastern regions of Belgium in the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries. According to the statisticians who studied the fate of children and criminality during the period 1820 to 1850 in Belgium, infanticide was rare and even highly exceptional. But was this really the case ? In order to illuminate this point, several sources are reviewed ; for the XVIIIth century : parish registers of the city of Liège, records concerning those sentenced to death, reports on the discovery of corpses ; for the xixth century : records of the Assize Court of Liège, police reports, civil status, and statistical publications.
