Peuplement de la France du Nord entre le Xe et le XVIe siècles

The medieval phase of the peopling of northern France is crucial to the understanding of this period. Global estimates of population figures permit the determination of a peak beginning with the llth century and culminating before 1300, followed by a protracted falling off and recuperation in the mid-16th century. If the countryside remains the predominant frame, the peopling of the cities evolves according to roughly the same rhythm. Current historical research is oriented toward the study of elusive phenomena : the fluctuation of the numerical relationship between the sexes, characteristics of the nuptial « model » before the « modem » period, longevity and infantile mortality. Regional inequalities are particularly évident on the level of densities, but one of the essential characteristics of this peopling is the extreme mobility of men. One of the essential traits of the medieval period is the stabilization of the plot between 900 and 1050. The extension of terrains or their slight recession determined our agrarian landscape : the formation of the boscage, among other things, dates from the end of this period. These observations also apply to the road network. The definitive settling of the village site followed the internai organization of the terrain around the castle, cemetery, and the church. The peopling of intermediate areas scarcely became important until after the phase of conglomeration during the l0th and 11th centuries, while exchange at short distances or toward the city accélérâtes with the 12th century. The urban fabric, insufficient or altered at the beginning of the Middle Ages, is slowly reconstituted between 100 and 1 200 by both new developments and a process of sprouting, but the definitive take-off of the towns, with their increasing ascendancy over the nearby rural economy, is late : toward 1450 the towns are still foreign éléments in the landscape. Les estimations globales sur les chiffres de population permettent de situer la crue d'hommes à partir du XIe avec apogée avant 1300 et récupération au milieu du XVIe siècle au terme d'une longue période de fléchissement. Si la campagne demeure le cadre de vie prépondérant, l'évolution du peuplement en ville suit à peu près le même rythme. La recherche historique actuelle s'oriente vers l'étude de phénomènes d'une saisie difficile : fluctuation du rapport numérique entre les sexes, caractères du « modèle » nuptial avant la période « moderne », longévité et mortalité infantile. Les inégalités régionales sont particulièrement sensibles au niveau des densités ; mais l'un des traits essentiels de ce peuplement est l'extrême mobilité des hommes. L'un des traits essentiels de la phase médiévale est la fixation du parcellaire entre 900 et 1050 ; l'extension de ces terroirs ou leur très léger recul ensuite ont modelé notre paysage agraire, la formation du bocage, entre autres, datant des moments finaux de cette période. Ces observations valent aussi pour le chevelu des chemins. La fixation définitive du site villageois a suivi l'organisation interne du terroir, autour du château, de l'aître, de l'église ; le peuplement intercalaire n'a guère pris d'ampleur après la phase de rassemblement des individus qui occupe les Xe et XIe siècles ; en revanche les échanges humains à courte distance ou vers la ville s'accélèrent à partir du XIIe siècle. Le tissu urbain, insuffisant ou altéré, au début du moyen-âge, s'est lentement reconstitué par bourgeonnement ou créations entre 1000 et 1200 ; mais l'essor définitif des cités avec emprise croissante sur l'économie rurale proche, phénomène de rééquilibrage du peuplement est tardif : vers 1450 les villes sont encore des éléments étrangers dans le paysage.
