The medieval phase of the peopling of northern France is crucial to the understanding of this period. Global estimates of population figures permit the determination of a peak beginning with the llth century and culminating before 1300, followed by a protracted falling off and recuperation in the mid-16th century. If the countryside remains the predominant frame, the peopling of the cities evolves according to roughly the same rhythm. Current historical research is oriented toward the study of elusive phenomena : the fluctuation of the numerical relationship between the sexes, characteristics of the nuptial « model » before the « modem » period, longevity and infantile mortality.
