The essay argues that recent studies of the formation of the Jewish scriptural canon tend to indicate the Hasmonean period as the most probable time at which such a canon became ‘ official’ or ‘ public’. It is further argued that the creation of a fixed public canon was part of a deliberate policy by which the Hasmoneans sought to determine the parameters of the religion of their greatly enlarged kingdom of Judah and probably as a necessary basis for an educational system beyond the limited circles of the scribal school(s) and even private education of others by scribes.
