The author investigates four spots in the southern part of the french Massif Central which are characterised by the outcropping of soft rocks. These are the district of Celles-Liausson, near Lodève, the valley of river Serre through the Causse of Sévérac, the district of the Pradailles in the Camarès basin, and the vale of Ady, west of Rodez. These are large depressed areas that were hollowed out and are nowadays overlooked by the table-like heights made in hard rocks around them. In order to explain their formation, the author considers that orogenic movements have « prepared » the bedrock and that hydro-eolian processus have then hollowed these areas.
