The metaphoric use of proper names applies the image of a notorious character (initial referent) to a textual one (second referent): in this paper, I study the evolution of that use through times, genres and contexts. Always related to a strong orality, it first appeared in Plautus’ theater as a burlesque tool, and then became a rhetoric one until Juvenal’s oeuvre thanks to Cicero’s and Catullus’ influence, but it varied from an author to another.L’emploi métaphorique du nom propre impose l’image d’un personnage notoire (référent premier) à un personnage textuel (référent second).
