Timôn de Syracuse et les drachmes rhodiennes à Délos

The interpretation of the decree of the League of Islanders IG XII.5, 817, which dates back to the first years of the 2nd century B.C., has always given rise to questions. At a time when Rhodes was the ruling power in the Aegean, the text mentions a premium on Rhodian money, demanded from the merchants by the grain commissioners (sitônai) of the League. Arguing against the standard view that the affair concerned an exchange against the Tenian currency, this analysis proposes that the right explanation must be sought in the evaluation of the Rhodian currency against the Attic, in fact, probably in the ratio of the reduced Rhodian drachms to Attic tetrobols. On the market of Delos, to which international traders brought goods for redistribution, the price of grain was set in Attic silver during the period of Rhodian domination, even though the Rhodian currency was legal tender by the koinon of the islanders.Réinterprétation du décret de la confédération des Insulaires IG XII.5, 817 (premières années du IIe siècle av. Contre la solution selon laquelle il s'agirait d'un change contre des monnaies de Ténos, l'auteur montre que l'explication doit résider dans l'évaluation de l'argent rhodien en argent attique, et au-delà sans doute du rapport entre drachmes rhodiennes réduites et tétroboles attiques. Sur le marché de redistribution alimenté par le commerce international qu'était Délos, les prix du grain sont restés libellés en argent attique même à l'époque de la domination rhodienne, alors que l'argent rhodien avait cours légal comme moyen de paiement dans le koinon des Insulaires.Bresson Alain.
