Macrinus' reign (217-21 8 A. D.) puts some problems about the justification he gave of his power, a difficult one because of Caracalla' s murder, his relatives' survival and Macrinus' equestrian origin, who caused hostilities in the senate. Whereas Herodian ascribes to Macrinus a bitter polemic against the dynastic succession and a propaganda based on the choice of the best, other literary and documentary sources state instead that Macrinus tried to connect himself with his predecessors' tradition. The problem has to be examined considering on one hand Herodian' s historiographical tendencies and his political ideas and of the social class he belonged to, on the other hand Macrinus' aims at the accession and during his reign.Le règne de Mac...
