The archaic marble animal head Athens, Acropolis Museum n. 122, is considered to be a lion's head and part of an architectural appliqué relief. On the basis of factural observations, we suggest that it is a fragment of a statue. Besides, some features seem quite unusual for a lion. The creature may be a bear related to Artemis Brauronia. The Brauronion of the Athenian Acropolis would have been set up by Peisistratos before 550 B.C.
