The Persian archer at Persepolis : aspects of chronology, style and symbolism

The purpose of this paper is to discuss selected aspects of the Persian Archer coinage within the context of Persepolis. First I shall discuss the Apadana foundation deposits at the site, since they play such a significant role in scholarship on the chronology of early Persian and archaic Greek coinage. The thrust of this section will be to shed new light both on the absence of Archer coins in this deposit and on the emphatic presence of gold « Croeseids ». Then I shall proceed to a discussion of the rhetorical nature of the Apadana deposits. The aim here is to penetrate in a deeper way the imperial ideology which is reflected in the Apadana palace very literally from the foundations upward. This discussion attempts to see the foundation deposits (with their exclusion of Archer coins) as part of a rhetorical program of the building which is also articulated (albeit in different terms) on the facade reliefs of its great stairways. Finally, in Section III, I shall take initial steps toward analysing the artistic properties of the Persian Archer series within the broad context of the Achaemenid imperial program as we know it best : from Persepolis.Le but est d'étudier certains aspects du monnayage perse à l'archer dans le contexte de Persépolis. En premier lieu, je traiterai des dépôts de fondation de l'Apadana, puisqu'ils jouent un rôle important dans la chronologie des premières monnaies perses et des monnaies grecques archaïques. De nouveaux points de vue seront apportés sur l'absence des monnaies à l'archer et sur la présence des « créséides » d'or. J'étudierai ensuite la nature rhétorique des dépôts de l'Apadana. Il s'agit sur ce point d'analyser en profondeur l'idéologie impériale qui s'y reflète. Les dépôts de fondation (avec leur exclusion des pièces à l'archer) doivent être considérés comme une partie du programme rhétorique du bâtiment qui est aussi présent (sous une forme différente) sur les reliefs du grand escalier. Finalement, je proposai des remarques préliminaires sur les caractères artistiques des séries à l'archer à l'intérieur du contexte du programme impérial achéménide là où nous le connaissons le mieux, à Persépolis.Root Margaret Cool.
