This article deals with the question of taxation in Asia Minor, both in the territory administered directly by the king (basilike chora) and within the cities. Following the reforms of Darius I, the taxation imposed by the persian authorities was based on a rational valu- tation of wealth. This presupposes land records and a state apparatus capable of carrying out the land survey of the chora. The Greek cities in Asia Minor, although they were obliged to pay a phoros as a sign of their subjugation, continued to apply the patriot nomoi, during the period of Persian domination.
