Le motif du banquet couché dans le monde grec

J.-M. Dentzer's important book reconsiders the still unresolved problem of the meaning of the scenes with a reclining banqueter, which occur so often on reliefs from the fifth century onwards. To do this, the A. undertook to investigate thouroughly the originis and development of this motive throughout the Near East, from the third millenium to the hellenistic period. Pottery, small bronzes, terracottas and painting demonstrate the social significance of the motive, which has been passed over by the symbolic interpretations predominant up to now. In fact, J.-M. Dentzer shows that the banquet scene is an iconogra- phical montage sometimes juxtaposing elements which would not be met with together in reality, their function being to celebrate important men, to whom a cult is rendered as heroes. This should once and for all refute the «Totenmahl» theory.L'important livre de J.-M. Pour ce faire, l'A. s'est astreint à une très vaste enquête qu'il a conduite dans tout le Proche-Orient et du IIIe millénaire jusqu'au seuil de l'époque hellénistique : la céramique, la petite plastique en bronze et en terre cuite, la peinture attestent le sens social du motif, occulté par les interprétations symboliques qui ont prédominé jusqu'ici. J.-M. Dentzer démontre qu'il s'agit en fait d'un montage iconographique d'éléments, parfois incompatibles dans la réalité, qui ont tous pour fonction d'exalter un grand personnage à qui est rendu un culte héroïque.
