Sociality and Seriality in Digital Reading:Two Extra Memos for this Millennium

This contribution focuses on the phenomenon of digital social reading, a group of reading-related activities involving rating books online, sharing reviews, joining discussion forums, creating social media posts, and curating public lists of books. Contemporary digital reading practices revive historical trends related to the reception of serialised publication of literary texts while also facilitating social interactions with other readers. The serialisation of content and the sociality of reading are two deeply intertwined aspects of twenty-first-century reading practices, and they are particularly significant in shaping new generations of readers worldwide. The chapter argues that in a cultural landscape dominated by multimodal communication and mobile devices, the understanding of reading experiences requires consideration of these two dimensions
