The goal of this study was to take a census and to count the Douai Free-Masons during the first half of the 19th century, and then to describe this masonic population under its various aspects while taking into account the evolutions which took place over the period under study. The social history of the Douai Lodge displays a progressive change, which took place year after year, in its recruiting : a geographical withdrawal to the immediate urban surroundings, a growing importance of the local notabilities, a regular increase of the average age, an ever heavier representation of the trading professions and an ever lower number and influence of the «idle», pensioners and land-owners, who yield their power to the more dynamic social categor...
