Developing Criteria for Reconstructing Visual Arguments Using Meta-visual Disputes

Reconstruction is a method for analyzing visual arguments in which visual messages are (verbally) expressed in terms of conclusion and premises. In this paper, I aim to develop requirements for reconstructing multimodal visual arguments using a notion called meta-visual disputes. Meta-visual disputes are disputes about the use of pictures and potentially other visual elements. As such, they help us understand how visual elements should be incorporated into the conclusion and premises. More specifically, meta-visual disputes show that reconstruction should be multimodal and non-reductionist in order to make a comprehensive analysis of visual arguments possible
