The proportion of women in the Irish Assembly is fairly low compared to that in other member States of the European Union, despite a slight increase in recent years. This can be explained by the Irish electoral system, but also by the reluctance of both major parties to encourage their women candidates. Thus no official measures have been taken in favour of women-men parity, contrary to other European countries.
