That the Union failed its purpose is well-known. The aim of this paper is to show that this failure was partly due to the fact that this measure was tantamount to arguing in a circle, and that, ignoring as it did deep-rooted Irish responses to the law, catholic and protestant, it remained underpinned by the colonial logics it had tried to by-pass.L'échec de l'Union est un fait bien connu.
