This article is an attempt to trace the changes in the teaching of Irish history in the schools in Ireland, North and South, between partition and the first half of the 1990s, and to analyse in what way these can be considered as reflecting social evolutions and changes in Irish historiography and in perceptions of identity, from a comparative perspective. Before the 1960s, educational policies linked to Irish history were deeply divergent. The Irish Free State used the study of the Irish past as an instrument in the (re)building of a Gaelic, Catholic nation, while, in Northern Ireland, the Unionist government stressed the link with Great Britain, and encouraged the study of British history first and foremost.
