L'enseignement de l'histoire irlandaise dans les écoles du Nord et du Sud, 1921-1996 : divergences, convergences

This article is an attempt to trace the changes in the teaching of Irish history in the schools in Ireland, North and South, between partition and the first half of the 1990s, and to analyse in what way these can be considered as reflecting social evolutions and changes in Irish historiography and in perceptions of identity, from a comparative perspective. Before the 1960s, educational policies linked to Irish history were deeply divergent. The Irish Free State used the study of the Irish past as an instrument in the (re)building of a Gaelic, Catholic nation, while, in Northern Ireland, the Unionist government stressed the link with Great Britain, and encouraged the study of British history first and foremost. The teaching of Irish history underwent radical changes between the end of the 1960s and the 1990s however, as a result of the combined influence of a number of social, historiographical and pedagogical factors. The new policies, and the renewed perceptions of identity to be found in the school textbooks, seem to reflect a more open attitude as regards the position of Protestants in Irish history in the Republic of Ireland, while, in the North, since 1991, a more central place has been given to the history of Ireland, from a Northern Irish point of view.Le présent article cherche à donner un aperçu des changements qu'a connus l'enseignement de l'histoire irlandaise dans les écoles d'Irlande du Nord et du Sud, entre la partition de 1921 et la première moitié des années 1990, dans une perspective comparative. Avant les années 1960, on peut parler d'une polarisation des politiques éducatives liées à l'histoire irlandaise, l'État Libre Irlandais nationaliste cherchant à utiliser celle-ci dans une oeuvre de (re) construction nationale gaélique et catholique, tandis que les unionistes au pouvoir au Nord mettaient l'accent sur leur citoyenneté britannique, et donc d'abord sur l'histoire de la Grande-Bretagne. Les politiques d'enseignement de l'histoire ont cependant été profondément remises en question entre la fin des années 1960 et les années 1990, de manières différentes dans les deux parties du pays, sous l'influence combinée de facteurs sociaux, historiographiques et pédagogiques notamment. Les nouvelles politiques, de même que les représentations identitaires et nationales véhiculées dans les manuels scolaires, illustrent une attitude plus ouverte vis-à-vis de la place des protestants dans l'histoire irlandaise dans la République d'Irlande, tandis qu'au Nord on accorde maintenant (depuis 1991) une place centrale à l'histoire de l'Irlande, envisagée d'un point de vue nord-irlandais.Fischer Karin.
