In The Haw Lantern Seamus Heaney interrogates his own experiences and the collective Irish past, looking for solid foundations on which to build a renewed cultural identity. In « Parable Island » he plays the role of a sceptical tourist to critique the historical myths that separate the two traditions in Ireland, each « vying with a fierce possessiveness/for the right to set 'the island story 'straight ». In two poems of family history Heaney revisits scenes of 19th-century sectarian tensions. Finally, in « Wolfe Tone » and « The Shooting Script » he revises nationalist stereotypes of romantic Irishness while finding a selfless courage in the patriot and a vital creative source in the Irish language - exemplifying the realistic but hopeful ...
