« The Island Story » : Revising Irish History in Heaney's The Haw Lantern

In The Haw Lantern Seamus Heaney interrogates his own experiences and the collective Irish past, looking for solid foundations on which to build a renewed cultural identity. In « Parable Island » he plays the role of a sceptical tourist to critique the historical myths that separate the two traditions in Ireland, each « vying with a fierce possessiveness/for the right to set 'the island story 'straight ». In two poems of family history Heaney revisits scenes of 19th-century sectarian tensions. Finally, in « Wolfe Tone » and « The Shooting Script » he revises nationalist stereotypes of romantic Irishness while finding a selfless courage in the patriot and a vital creative source in the Irish language - exemplifying the realistic but hopeful nationalism that characterizes his later political poetry.Dans The Haxu Lantern, Seamus Heaney explore à la fois son expérience propre et la dimension collective du passé irlandais, à la recherche de fondations solides sur lesquelles bâtir une nouvelle identité culturelle.
