This article deals with the nationalist movement of Young Ireland and with the different arguments that are developed to criticize the Act of Union. The movement, which was born in 1842, advocates the creation of a free Irish nation. It therefore focuses on the necessity to repeal the Act of Union because it reduces Ireland to provincial status. What is more, Young Ireland puts forward the fact that the economic, cultural and political situation of Ireland has dramatically suffered from the Union. In their discourse, the creation of an Irish nation is systematically considered as the logical consequence of Repeal.
