Beyond Self-Determination Towards Co-Determination in Ireland

In Northern Ireland, the principle of self-determination is now seen in the context of « the totality of relationships in these islands » rather than in terms of the ownership of the territory on which the people who enter into those relationships live. The present paper describes the adjustment to the new circumstances created by this major conceptual change.En Irlande du Nord, le droit à l'auto-détermination est aujourd'hui envisagé dans le contexte de la « totalité des relations enjeu dans ces îles », et non plus dans celui du droit de propriété du territoire sur lequel vivent les populations imbriquées dans ce réseau de relations complexes.
