Seamus Heaney's need to declare poetic independence comes primarily from his Ulster heritage, an Irish Catholic forced to speak an alien tongue, fearful of reprisal even for speaking his own name aloud. He has a deep sense that the Irish names of families and places must be transmitted to the next generation. As one who understands Gaelic well enough to translate the Irish saga Buik Shuibhne, Heaney is sensitive to pressures on Irish poets to write in English rather than in Gaelic.
