In spite of her international fame among the romantics of her day, of her contribution to a better knowledge of Ireland abroad and of her involvement in the politics of her country, Lady Morgan is still considered as a rather embarrassing figure by a majority of the Irish literary world. This seems due to her refusal to put up with the restraints of her time and of her sex. She never accepted the restrictions traditionally imposed on women, she refused to adopt clearly defined religious positions and her political tenets were always non sectarian.
