Unionism in Northern Ireland, like Nationalism in the South, could not have existed without a powerful and docile working class base. In the South, the slogan « Labour must wait » and the populist appeal of de Valera blocked the emergence of any left wing alternative based on class politics. In Northern Ireland the foundation of the Ulster Unionist Labour Association aimed at creating a united front of employers and workers loyal to the Union, the Empire, the Party, the Leader.
