In Northern Ireland, since 1979, in Derry, the British Broadcasting Corporation has begun an original and unique experiment : a community radio station : Radio Foyle. It originated with a real need for local news and local programmes for a specific audience. Radio Foyle received the full backing of the BBC NI Controller, James Hawthorne. Following 6 years of broadcasting, the station has now found its proper rhythm with 20 hours of original programmes broadcast 5 days a week (4 hours per day). Catholics and protestants alike appreciate «their» radio where they meet and where they create their own programmes.
