Le « Bestiaire » fantastique de Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

As a member of the Anglo-Irish Protestant Ascendancy in the XIXth century, Le Fanu experienced the pangs of a persecuted conscience. For him, belonging to this class was a sign of decadence, the constant reminder of an unescapable historical sin. As a writer he was inspired by the fantastic genre in which the possibilities of exchanges between the visible and the invisible give access to the darkest areas of the mind. The fantastic beasts which are to be found in his most terrifying short stories are symbols of the mythical struggle between Man and Evil as well as allegories of the regression from man - to animal kind. Thanks to his readings of Swedenborg Le Fanu was able to endow these beasts with an intense literary life and thus to explore every degree of human terror and suffering.Membre de l'Ascendancy anglo-irlandaise protestante au XIXe siècle, Le Fanu a connu les affres de la conscience persécutée. Appartenir à cette caste était pour lui un signe de décadence, le constant rappel d'une faute historique inexpiable. En tant qu'écrivain, il a été inspiré par le genre fantastique dans lequel les échanges possibles entre le visible et l'invisible donnent accès aux zones les plus sombres de la conscience. Les animaux fantastiques qui rôdent dans ses nouvelles les plus terrifiantes sont le symbole du combat mythique de l'Homme avec le Mal et constituent autant d'allégories de la régression de l'être vers le stade animal. A partir de ses lectures de Swedenborg, Le Fanu a su donner à ces bêtes une vie littéraire intense et a pu ainsi explorer tous les degrés de la souffrance et de la terreur.Lozes Jean.
