As a member of the Anglo-Irish Protestant Ascendancy in the XIXth century, Le Fanu experienced the pangs of a persecuted conscience. For him, belonging to this class was a sign of decadence, the constant reminder of an unescapable historical sin. As a writer he was inspired by the fantastic genre in which the possibilities of exchanges between the visible and the invisible give access to the darkest areas of the mind. The fantastic beasts which are to be found in his most terrifying short stories are symbols of the mythical struggle between Man and Evil as well as allegories of the regression from man - to animal kind.
