Samuel Beckett's critical essay Proust is considerably influenced by Schopenhauer's philosophical ideas. The article examines this influence under three headings : 1) pessimism ; 2) art and the aesthetic ; 3) asceticism. The article concludes with criticism of Beckett's treatment of the aesthetic which is conceived solely in terms of a momentary consolatory experience. Art not only evokes moments of «blessedness», but also presents a critical analysis of social reality.
