Sunningdale, Ten Years Later

Ten years after the Sunningdale Conference, Richard Deutsch interviewed Irish and Northern Irish politicians who took part in the discussions. The following points are dealt with : the in the involvement Conference and the feelings of the participants at the time ; the positions of the respective delegations and their achievements ; at the time, had the British found the «answer» to the Irish Question ? The new British policy in 1972 ; the part played by the British P.M., Edward Heath ; Sunningdale as a landmark in Anglo-Irish history ; the Provisional IRA's reactions to the Sunningdale package ; why did Sunningdale fail ? What is left of the Conference and its mood ? The reader should be aware of the presentation technique : this is in no respect a round table. Interviews and questions were put separately in Dublin and in Belfast before being assembled for this article. Many more questions are still to be answered and the author is well aware of such shortcomings, however, in due time, official papers will reveal other aspects of this important Conference.Dix ans après la Conférence de Sunningdale, Richard Deutsch a interrogé plusieurs participants irlandais et nord-irlandais. Les points traités sont les suivants : la participation à la Conférence et les sentiments des participants ; la position des diverses délégations et leurs éventuels succès ; les Britanniques avaient-ils trouvé la «réponse» à la Question Irlandaise ? La nouvelle position britannique en 1972 ; le rôle du Premier Ministre britannique, Edward Heath ; la Conférence en tant que date-clef de l'histoire anglo-irlandaise ; le rôle de TIRA Provisoire ; les raisons de l'échec de Sunningdale ; ce qu'il reste de cette Conférence, dix ans plus tard. Pour rendre la lecture plus aisée, les questions et les réponses ont été présentées ensemble, mais le lecteur ne doit pas perdre de vue qu'il ne s'agit pas d'une table-ronde. Il reste encore bien des points à explorer et l'auteur est conscient des limites de cette approche. En temps voulu, les documents officiels révéleront certainement d'autres aspects.Deutsch Richard.
